Paper-based Horse Records
Information and details being recorded on paper has been a familiar and comfortable process for horse owners over the years. While this method may be common, there are pros and cons to consider when evaluating (or continuing to use) paper to keep track of your records.
Pros:
- Minimal cost to get started (just need some paper/notebooks and pen)
- Very easy to begin with records on paper (no learning curve)
- A computer is not needed
Cons:
- Records can be easily lost since there is not a good way to backup records (other than making/faxing copies) or writing the same inforamtion in multiple locations
- Details can be in multiple places (boxes, notebooks, dashboard of truck, clipboards, etc) can take time and causes hassles
- Must update records in several different places (for example your active inventory list and the mare's Offspring list when a new foal is born)
- Handwritten records are sometimes not easily read by others (accountants, vets, consultants, etc)
