Choosing a Horse Record Keeping System

Horse picture With so many processes available for keeping track of your horses, how do you determine which one is best for you? The resources you have available and your budget are important factors in your decision.

Keeping records on paper requires minimal materials - just paper and a pen (and notebooks/binders if you wanted). Electronic record keeping methods use a computer - is your computer have the requirements needed to run a software program?

Be sure to keep your time availability in mind as well - how much time is needed to update your records as new events occur and reports and lists are needed? Some farms have employees or consultants who keep records - how easily is the system for them to use?

Another factor to consider is the cost of the system. While the paper and spreadsheet methods have minimal startup costs, horse software programs available on the market today range greatly in price (from $50 into the hundreds and more).
